Professor Neil Vaughan – Short Background
Current Position
Professor Neil Vaughan is a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow (RFREng) since 2018. Professor Neil Vaughan is based at University of Exeter (Russell Group) leading and supervising research team in Data Science and AI for healthcare, in the Institute of Biomedical and Clinical Science (IBCS). He is a Senior Member of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB), Senior member of IEEE (No. 94875568), Computational Intelligence Society, Full Fellow of AdvanceHE (HEA) with PGCert LTHE, EPSRC ICT Pioneer and Editor of the Journal of Behavioural Robotics.
Previous Positions
Since 2010 he held numerous tenured academic positions including 2019 Associate Professor (SL-B) University of Chester (UoC) and 2018 Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at University of Chester (UoC). 2018 Visiting full Professor at Chandigarh University, 2017 Assistant Professor at Indiana University & Purdue University, USA, 2017 Tenured Lecturer in Computing at University of West London (UWL), 2019 Associate Professor (SL-B) at University College Isle of Man, 2018 Associate Professor (SL-B) at Laksamana College of Business, Brunei, 2017 Associate Professor (SL-B) in London, Kensington College of Business and from 2010 was at Bournemouth University as Post-Doctoral researcher.
Research Awards
Professor Neil Vaughan has strong track record of research awards including 1st prize winner of 2019 Health Education and Training (HEAT) awards, 2018 Welsh Health Hackathon, 2017 Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship, awarded the 2016 IT Innovation Award twice from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He received the NHS award: Acorn Innovation Prize from headquarters of the Department of Health with £10,000 prize. In 2015 he joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University #1 in China. In 2014 he was selected by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as UK ICT Pioneer receiving a prize for ‘Transforming Society’. He received prestigious BU Postgraduate Research Prize. In 2013 he was global recipient of the IET scholarship and the IET Innovation Awards, was selected for the Patient Safety Awards and the Times Higher Education Awards, and received 1st prize at highly competitive IET Ambition award in London. With MIT and Harvard his research in 2013 was awarded funding at the ASME Innovation Showcase 2013 as best research project in Europe. In 2011 he presented his research at UK parliament to MPs and the select committee for Science Engineering & Technology (SET). His research focusses on medical technology, Virtual Reality (VR) and computational intelligence. He was awarded Best Research prize and Blackwell Publishing Prize 2006 with Brunel University Medal in 2005 and Rotary International Council Research award in 2000. Before returning to academia, he worked 6 years in industry in computing health data research for government (LogicaCMG) and in 1980s-1990s he co-founded Key Resources Limited which became one of the leading dot-com bubble software supplier and consultancies based in Exeter.
Teaching – Module Leader
Professor Vaughan’s teaching at many universities has focussed mainly on Health Informatics, Machine learning, computational intelligence, data science, database management (CO6002), web management (CO6027), Electronics and Design engineering at levels 4-7.
At University of Exeter, he is involved with MSc Health Data Science.
At University of Chester, he was Senior Lecturer and leader and founder of the Bio-inspired Computing MSc module. He is module leader for level 6, CO6002 – Modern Database Management Systems and CO6027 – Managing a Web-based Environment for BSc Computer Science and BSc Cyber Security.
At Chandigarh University he was Visiting full Professor in CSE Artificial intelligence & Machine Learning.
At UoC Isle of Man, he was Senior Lecturer, module leader of level 6, CO6002 – Modern Database Management Systems and CO6027 and Managing a Web-based Environment.
At Laksamana College of Business, Brunei, he was Senior Lecturer, module leader of level 6, CO6002 – Modern Database Management Systems and CO6027 and Managing a Web-based Environment.
At Kensington College of Business, London, he was module leader of level 6, CO6002 – Modern Database Management Systems and CO6027 and Managing a Web-based Environment.
At University of West London (UWL) he was tenured academic lecturer and module leader for Information Systems in Healthcare and Data Architecture in Healthcare in the level 7 MSc Health Informatics and computer science level 6 modules.
At University of Indiana-Purdue he was appointed an Assistant Professor teaching programming for BSc computer and information science.
At Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University he was appointed an Assistant Professor teaching machine learning, programming and databases for BEng Computer Science and Technology.
At Bournemouth University he was Post-doctoral researcher and involved with teaching for BSc (Hons) Design Engineering and Electronics engineering.
At University of Granada, Spain he is involved with external examiner roles.
He actively participates in Learning and Teaching Conferences, including teaching enhancements for employability.
Since 2010 I have been involved with teaching at HEIs in UK and USA.
